Bubble Mixtures

I have attempted many different mixes for running in our bubble machines over the years and always revert back to shop bought. I have wasted a lot of money trying to ‘perfect’ the mixture, but it’s never once turned out better that the shop bought stuff, save your money and don’t bother trying!
A 1 litre of bubble mixture from a pound shop, for me, always gives more consistent results than any mixture I have attempted to make.
It also seems to work out just as cheap. Just keep your eyes pealed in shops like the Range, home bargains and pound shops as invariably they have litre bottles of mixture and I bulk buy whenever I find them on offer.
Update – new recipe found!
Recently a news article caught my attention as it was for a recipe for the perfect large bubble mixture. This had been worked out scientifically and the understanding they had of what was happening in the recipe gave me hope so I tried it.

- 1/2 tsp guar
- 3 tbsp IPA
- 2 pints water (RO Water)
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 3 tbsp Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid
First mix the guar and the IPA until the solutions evenly distributed and pour this into a 1 ltr bottle that will be used for storing and mixing the rest of the bubble solution in.
Now add in the 2 pints of water (I use RO water) and gently mix for 10 minutes, after which leave the solution for a while to thicken. Once thickened add in the 1/2 tsp of baking powder and mix in. Now add the dishwashing liquid, very carefully pouring it in and slowly mixing as to not froth up the mixture.

I also added a few drops of Detol to prevent anything growing in the solution while its stored.
Initial experiments were performed on a really windy day with a large kids bubble wand. The bubbles that ensued were really substantial and long lasting even in the gusty wind. We now just need a calm day to try some really big bubbles. I may also try this mixture in the bubble machine but for the volume of mixture we get through I think the shop bought will still be more suitable for the machine.
